Born on February 16, 1990, The Weeknd’s birth name is Abel Makkonen Tesfaye. Growing up in Toronto, Ontario, he was raised by his mother and grandmother following his parents’ separation. He has Ethiopian roots, as his parents emigrated to Canada in the late ’80s. During his childhood, his father was largely absent, with the two meeting only a couple of times. Religion played a significant role in Tesfaye’s upbringing; he regularly attended services at the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
