Born on April 1, 1961, in Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland, Susan Magdalane Boyle is the youngest among nine siblings, with four brothers and four sisters. Her father, Patrick, a WWII veteran, worked in various jobs including as a miner, while her mother, Bridget, was employed as a shorthand typist. Occasionally, her father sang at a local venue named Bishop’s Blaize. Often bullied in her youth, Susan was led to believe she suffered from a learning disability as a result of a challenging birth that deprived her of oxygen. However, she later discovered as an adult that she had been misdiagnosed and actually has Asperger syndrome alongside an “above average” IQ. School was tough for her, resulting in few qualifications, but she did take vocal lessons from Fred O’Neil and attended Edinburgh Acting School.

Career

In 1998, Boyle invested her savings into creating a professional demo which she distributed to record labels, radio talent contests, and both local and national television. This demo featured her performances of “Cry Me a River,” “Killing Me Softly,” and “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.” Following her audition for “Britain’s Got Talent,” her renditions were uploaded online. Additionally, early recordings—including her version of “Cry Me a River”—featured on the CD “Music for a Millennium Celebration, Sounds of West Lothian,” which she contributed to in 1999.

Encouraged by her mother, Boyle applied to audition for “Britain’s Got Talent” after winning several singing contests. Previously, she had abandoned an audition for “The X Factor” due to her belief that appearance was prioritized over talent. Almost giving up on her “Britain’s Got Talent” audition as well, she was persuaded by her former vocal coach, O’Neil, to continue.
