Early Life

Born Marshall Bruce Mathers III on October 17, 1972, in St. Joseph, Missouri, Eminem’s childhood was marked by frequent relocations across Missouri with his single mother until they finally settled in Warren, Michigan. His parents, Marshall Sr. and Deborah “Debbie” Rae Nelson, were once part of a band named Daddy Warbucks, performing primarily in Ramada Inns across the mid-west before their divorce.

Post-divorce, the pair often traversed between Michigan and Missouri, living with relatives and rarely staying in one place for more than a year. Initially, Eminem aspired to be a comic book artist, a dream that shifted after his encounter with his first rap song, “Reckless – Featuring Ice-T,” from the soundtrack of the film “Breakin’.” His half-brother Ronnie gifted him the album.

At the age of 14, he adopted the rap name “M&M,” drawing from his initials. By 17, he dropped out of high school and took on various odd jobs while writing music and engaging in freestyle rap battles throughout the city.

Slim Shady

Marshall eventually earned recognition and respect within the local Detroit hip-hop community. He joined a crew called Bassmint Productions, which later became known as Soul Intent. While recording music with Mashin’ Duck Records and FBT Productions, he managed to keep a minimum-wage job as a cook and dishwasher. In 1996, through a record label named Web Entertainment, Eminem released his debut album titled “Infinite.”

During this period, he adopted the more provocative and violent persona of “Slim Shady.” As Slim Shady, his lyrics delved into themes of drugs, sex, violence, rape, and murder. In the spring of 1997, he recorded “The Slim Shady EP,” which Web Entertainment released that winter.

Meeting Dr. Dre

In March 1998, Eminem appeared in The Source magazine’s unsigned hype column. Shortly thereafter, he was evicted from his residence and chose to travel to Los Angeles for the Rap Olympics. Although he finished in second place, a staff member from Interscope Records was impressed by his performance and forwarded The Slim Shady EP to CEO Jimmy Iovine.

Jimmy Iovine played the album for Dr. Dre, who had recently started his own label, Aftermath Records, in search of fresh talent. Dre later expressed his initial response to Eminem’s demo as follows:

“I was like: what the fuck!?, and who the fuck is that? In my entire career in the music industry, I have never found anything from a demo tape or a CD. When Jimmy played this, I said, ‘Find him. Now.’”

Eminem was located and quickly signed to Aftermath Entertainment, where he re-recorded and refined The Slim Shady EP under Dre’s direction as Executive Producer.

The album became an immediate commercial and critical triumph, achieving 4X Platinum certification in the US alone and earning Eminem a Grammy for Best Rap Album.

His subsequent albums were significant hits. In May 2000, he released The Marshall Mathers LP, which became the fastest-selling hip-hop album ever and eventually exceeded 21 million sales. His following project, 2002’s The Eminem Show, surpassed 27 million albums sold.

As of this writing, Eminem has sold over 220 million albums globally, ranking him as the ninth best-selling musical artist of all time, following Pink Floyd, Rihanna, Led Zeppelin, Madonna, Elton John, Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, and The Beatles.

Shady Records/50 Cent

Eminem established his own label under Aftermath Records, which he named Shady Records, back in 1999. The first group to sign with the label was D12, comprised of rappers Eminem was acquainted with from Detroit.

During the filming of “8 Mile” in 2002, Eminem met an underground rapper from New York called 50 Cent. Having listened to several of 50 Cent’s mixtapes, Eminem was eager to sign him to the label. Consequently, 50 Cent became the first solo artist to join Shady Records. That same year, Shady Records released the soundtrack for 8 Mile, which went on to sell over 11 million copies globally.

50 Cent’s debut album dropped in February 2003 and achieved sales of 14 million albums worldwide. Throughout his career, 50 Cent has sold a total of 30 million albums.

The above table reveals that the years 2000 to 2003, which were peak record-selling years for Eminem, are not represented, as data from that time was unavailable. During those years, he sold more than 50 million records and had 88 solo concerts as part of the Anger Management Tour.

During that period, Eminem personally earned a minimum of $100 million from record sales, touring, and merchandise. Consequently, his total career earnings, conservatively estimated as of the present, amount to $417.7 million.

Awards and Milestones

Eminem has garnered a total of 15 Grammy Awards, eight American Music Awards, 17 Billboard Awards, one Academy Award (for the best song “Lose Yourself” from the 8 Mile soundtrack), one Primetime Emmy, and an MTV Europe Music Global Icon Award as of now.

In the month of November in 2022, Eminem was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Personal Life

In the past few years, Eminem has adopted a somewhat more reclusive lifestyle. He has been candid about his struggles with substance abuse and is currently sober. During a significant portion of the late 90s and early 2000s, many aspects of his personal life were laid bare in courtrooms, as he faced legal battles with both his mother and ex-wife Kim. He has a daughter, Hailie, with Kim, and he also holds custody of Whitney, Kim’s child from another relationship, as well as his niece, Alaina.

September 2021 saw the launch of Eminem’s “Mom’s Spaghetti” restaurant located in Detroit, Michigan.

Real Estate

Eminem purchased a home in Clinton Township, Michigan, for $1.483 million in 2000, which has served as his primary residence over the years.

In 2003, he acquired a 15,000-square-foot house in Oakland County, Michigan, for $4.8 million; this property was previously owned by the CEO of Kmart. Prospective visitors should be advised that Eminem has transformed the estate into a fortified location, equipped with electric fences and guard booths that are staffed around the clock by armed security. Furthermore, the entire neighborhood is secured with additional guard presence.
