Chelsea Clinton’s Net Worth and Salary: What Are They?

As the daughter of Bill Clinton, a former President of the United States, and Hillary Clinton, a former Secretary of State/Senator, Chelsea Clinton possesses a net worth of $30 million. This figure represents a combined wealth with her husband, Marc Mezvinsky, who is a partner at the large private equity firm TPG. Chelsea has accumulated her share of this net worth through her role at the consulting firm McKinsey & Company and her participation on various corporate boards, including internet company IAC. A filing with the SEC in January 2020 indicated that Chelsea earned $9 million in compensation from IAC during her tenure on the board up to that date. She also previously received an annual compensation of $250,000 for her role on the board of Expedia.

Having been in the public eye since childhood when her father was Governor of Arkansas, Chelsea grew up in the White House with her awkward teenage years documented by news outlets globally. Unlike the more polished daughters of Vice President Al Gore, Chelsea presented herself as the “everyman” first daughter. Yet, she matured, and by the time she started attending Stanford University, she had evolved into a sophisticated, intelligent, and politically astute woman—essentially, a well-rounded politician. Following that, she earned a master’s degree from University College, Oxford, and from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. Currently, she serves on multiple boards, including Common Sense Media, the School of American Ballet, and, naturally, the Clinton Global Initiative. She actively campaigned during her mother’s Presidential attempts in 2008 and 2016 and still managed to obtain a doctorate from the University of Oxford. Her union with Marc Mezvinsky, a successful investment banker, has enabled her to lead a comfortable lifestyle while traveling globally for various political events.

Early Life

Chelsea Victoria Clinton was born on February 27, 1980, in Little Rock, Arkansas, during Bill Clinton’s first term as governor of the state. Hillary noted that after hearing Judy Collins’ 1960 version of Joni Mitchell’s “Chelsea Morning,” Bill mentioned they should name their future daughter Chelsea. Chelsea exhibited academic talent similar to her parents, managing to read by age three. She skipped third grade and in 1993, when her father was elected as the 42nd President of the United States, the family relocated to Washington, D.C., where Chelsea attended Sidwell Friends School. By 1997, she was a semifinalist for the National Merit Scholarship and graduated from high school that same year, during which her father served as the graduation speaker, expressing, “A part of us longs to hold you once more.” Sidwell Friends School is viewed as the “Harvard of Washington D.C.’s private schools,” with Sasha and Malia Obama also being former attendees.

Continuing her education, Chelsea attended Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. Graduating with highest honors in 2001 with a degree in history, she then pursued her MPhil degree in international relations at Oxford University in 2003. Later, in 2010, she achieved her MPH degree from Columbia University’s School of Public Health and commenced teaching at Columbia in 2012.

Career

Following her graduation from Stanford and Oxford, Clinton joined McKinsey & Company and Avenue Capital Group. She later became the co-chair for a fundraising week supporting the Clinton Foundation before stepping into the role of Vice-Chair for the foundation. Additionally, she holds positions on the board of the School of American Ballet and IAC’s board of directors. In late 2011, NBC brought Chelsea onboard as a special correspondent. This three-month assignment permitted her to continue her work with the Clinton Foundation while pursuing her graduate studies. In February 2012, NBC extended her contract, which she concluded in the late summer of 2014.

Since 2011, Clinton has actively participated in the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation, serving as a board member and delivering paid speeches, with all earnings donated back to the foundation. The Clinton Foundation focuses on enhancing global health, empowering women, and fostering economic development.

Clinton is the author of five children’s picture books: “It’s Your World: Get Informed, Get Inspired and Get Going” (2015), “She Persisted: 13 American Women Who Changed the World” (2017, later adapted into a musical), “She Persisted Around the World: 13 Women Who Changed History” (2018), “Start Now!: You Can Make a Difference,” and “Don’t Let Them Disappear: 12 Endangered Species Across the Globe” (2019). Her second and third children’s books quickly became bestsellers.

In 2020, it was disclosed that Clinton was developing an Olympic-themed children’s book, which will be the third entry in her “She Persisted” series centering on women in sports. Titled “She Persisted in Sports: American Olympians Who Changed the Game,” it is set for publication on September 22 and will highlight notable athletes such as Wilma Rudolph, Mia Hamm, and Venus and Serena Williams.

The Philomel Books imprint, responsible for publishing Clinton’s children’s literature, will also launch a series of chapter books featuring 80-page narratives on the women from Clinton’s “She Persisted” series. The forewords for books about Harriet Tubman, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, and Oprah Winfrey will be penned by Chelsea and Hillary Clinton to commence the series.

In 2017, she co-authored a scholarly work titled “Governing Global Health: Who Runs the World and Why?”. Following this, she collaborated with her mother on “The Book of Gutsy Women: Favorite Stories of Courage and Resilience” in 2019, with both participating in promotional tours for the book.

Additionally, she has contributed numerous articles and opinion pieces that have appeared in major media outlets like CNN.com, Time magazine, Huffington Post, and Refinery 29, among others.

In July 2020, Clinton revealed her plans to establish a venture capital firm, Metrodora Ventures. She had been devising this business plan for several months and expressed interest in investing in at least two healthcare-related startups, including a pregnancy support application named Poppy Seed Health.

Hillary Clinton’s Presidential Campaigns

In December 2007, Chelsea Clinton started her campaign efforts in Iowa to support her mother’s pursuit of the Democratic presidential nomination. She traveled extensively, mainly visiting college campuses throughout the nation. Over a span of five months, Chelsea addressed her mother’s candidacy at 100 colleges. Ultimately, Hillary Clinton did not secure the Democratic nomination during the 2008 election, losing to Barack Obama.

In 2016, Clinton was actively involved in her mother’s presidential campaign as well. During this time, she participated in more than 200 public events nationwide. Notably, in July 2016, she delivered a heartfelt introduction for her mother at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, sharing personal anecdotes about her upbringing and highlighting her mother’s commitment to various issues and public service.

Personal Life

Chelsea Clinton married investment banker Marc Mezvinsky in 2010. Their families had been friends since the 1990s, and the couple met during a weekend Democratic political retreat in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. They got engaged during the Thanksgiving weekend of 2009, and after their honeymoon, they settled in New York City’s Gramercy Park. Their wedding, which took place in Rhinebeck, New York, was an interfaith ceremony (Mezvinsky being Jewish and Clinton being Methodist). The reception was hosted at Astor Courts, overlooking the Hudson River, at the home of former Oxygen Media producer Kathleen Hammer. On April 17, 2014, Clinton announced at a New York forum that she and Marc were expecting their first child.

The couple welcomed their first child, a daughter named Charlotte, on September 26, 2014. Their second child, a son named Aidan, was born on June 18, 2016. They later had a third son, Jasper, on July 22, 2019.

In February 2020, Chelsea Clinton celebrated her 40th birthday. During a New York Times interview in 2001, her father expressed immense pride, noting that his daughter “has her mother’s character and her father’s energy.”

During the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, Chelsea Clinton criticized President Donald Trump for his management of the crisis, citing a lack of effective plans to control its spread.

In early July 2020, Clinton expressed her support for renaming schools in Virginia’s Hanover County that honored Confederate generals. She stated: “I am not a resident of Hanover County in Virginia, but I am a parent. We shouldn’t have schools that celebrate the legacy of slavery and white supremacists in this country. All of our children deserve better.” For example, one of the schools is named Stonewall Jackson Middle School, while another is Lee-Davis High School. The Hanover County chapter of the NAACP is pursuing legal action to force these names to change. On July 14, 2020, the Hanover County school board narrowly voted 4-3 to rename those two schools associated with Confederate leaders.

Salary Highlights

A January 2020 SEC filing disclosed that Chelsea has received $9 million in compensation from IAC, where she has served on the Board alongside Barry Diller. Previously, she was a Board member at Expedia, where her base salary was $250,000 per year. From NBC, she earned $600,000 during the years 2013 and 2014.

Real Estate

In 2008, Marc and Chelsea acquired a three-bedroom, 1,922-square-foot condo in central Manhattan for $4 million. Situated on the tenth floor, the condo features a spacious open chef’s kitchen, and a living and dining area beneath magnificent ten-foot ceilings.

In 2013, Clinton and Mezvinsky sold this condo for $4.75 million and upgraded to a significantly larger 5,000-square-foot apartment priced at $10.5 million. Located just a few blocks from their previous residence, this new apartment is the longest in Manhattan, spanning an entire city block between 26th and 27th street. It is a luxurious, ultra-modern, “environmentally-conscious” home, boasting stunning views of Madison Square Park.
